“Ohhhhmmmmmm—wait, did I lock my keys in the car?”

I signed up for Deepak Chopra’s 21-day Meditation Challenge. Today is Day 1. I’m not very good at it, unless wondering whether I put soap in the dishwasher and how I can watch the new season of Breaking Bad (since DISH dropped AMC) counts as stillness.

Stupid DISH! You see? Hating my satellite TV provider just doesn’t bring me that healing energy I’m looking for.

Look, my eyes roll when people get too serious about stuff like synchronicity, just like everyone else too stressed out to notice their thoughts, let alone silence them, most days. But the thing is, I buy into the benefits of meditation. I just haven’t been able to stick with a practice long enough to experience them.

  1. I’ve been thinking I would like to try some kind of retreat, but maybe I should start small and slow. Hmmm.

  2. I’ve thought about trying it, but even then I picture myself sitting cross legged on the floor, feeling self-consciously stupid and thinking about what I need to buy at Walmart. Bad meditation attitude.

    I found meditation very hard. Either I was unable to concentrate of what we were supposed to be concentrating on, or I fell asleep. More than once, I woke up in the class to find everyone gone. However, it can be a very powerful, safe and free way to open your mind, improve your health, or reach new levels of creativity. It works.

  4. When I meditate, I go deep. And I ask myself if these pants give me a muffin top when I sit in this position. And I ponder the various ways to disguise muffin tops. Deep breathing is awesome, but it has its limitations. You can’t ever let the breath back out or the muffin top pokes back out.

    I am a failure at meditating these days. I have gone through meditation phases. Clearing the mind is difficult, but it is helpful to repeat a mantra-type word or series of words to start. (Mind still wanders but not at first.)

  6. Thanks for this! I’m definitely signing up. I went to a meditation class a couple months ago and it just about drove me crazy! I couldn’t do it. I guess it takes practice. This is a good way to start.

    I took a consciousness course in college, in which we were required to keep a meditation journal. I remember never being able to do it well – or falling asleep. C’est la vie.

I learned to meditate listening to tapes of Jon Kabat Zin who practices in a similar way to Deepak but the Chopra technique relieves you of all though if you use the words whereas Jon Kabat forces you to acknowledge thoughts and gently push them away. I like both but find this challenge is a much easier exercise – I found myself with tears today which often happens during meditation. It was great. The tears didn’t tax me in any way they just stayed on my cheeks.

  10. I try to meditate, but I keep drifting back to “We’re running out of milk,” and “I have to change that doctor’s appointment” and “I think I’m getting a cramp.” I also think of all the things I would like to get done now but I can’t because I’m meditating.
    But I keep trying. And usually I feel better afterwards, even if I don’t do it perfectly.
